1. Two-tone kitchen cabinets. Keep upper cabinets white or neutral for a clean, timeless feel, then go crazy with the lower cabinets by playing with various wood tones and deeper colors to take your kitchen in two different style directions.

2. Outdoor fabric used indoors. Outdoor fabrics are becoming increasingly hard to distinguish from traditional indoor fabrics, and many Houzzers are bringing them inside, where their durability makes them perfect for high-traffic dining room and living room furniture, as shown here.

3. Colored stainless steel appliances. Black stainless steel is making a buzz on Houzz. In a poll, nearly two-thirds of Houzzers say they would consider the dark alternative to shiny silver metal. (Shown here is LG’s new Black Stainless collection.) Not into the darkness? Head to the light with Whirlpool’s Sunset Bronze finish.
4. Extra-large-format tile. Large-format tiles (such as 12 by 24 inches) have been making an appearance in kitchens and bathrooms for some time now, but be on the lookout for extra-large-format ones. Just how extra? Try 31 by 71 inches, like the ceramic Ann Sacks tiles shown here on a fireplace surround project by Pangaea. That’s almost 3 by 6 feet!
Top 2016 Design Trends You Need To Know
As 2015 comes to a close, the question on most design fanatics’ minds is: “What’s next?” Which design trends will be popping up everywhere in the coming months? We have compiled a list of what we predict will be the biggest 2016 design trends. Here’s the scoop on five key design elements to keep an eye on as the year unfolds, as well as tips on how to seamlessly incorporate modern takes on these looks into your existing interiors.
2016 Design Trends
Sustainable Design
Cultural trends have long been known to influence design, and this coming year we can expect a big push toward eco-friendly interiors. Just as sustainability in architecture prides itself on blending form and function, it’s important to focus on using interior design elements that not only look great, but also are well made and minimize the impact to our ecosystem.
Incorporating natural materials such as wood or stone into your interiors is an easy way to achieve that goal. Whenever possible, look for artisan products. In addition to having a smaller carbon footprint than their mass-produced competitors, these products often have a longer lifespan.
‘Outdoor’ Prints
This term may seem vague, but in this context, we mean prints that can be found in nature. The coming year is poised for a comeback of plant-inspired decor, florals and animal prints. As with any print, a little goes a long way — especially when it comes to these bold looks.Rather than decking out an entire room in a big or heavy pattern, use it on one or two pieces that will be the focal point of the space. To ensure that your take on these wild looks stays modern and not too far over the top, consider incorporating prints that fall outside of their natural color scheme.
